Habitat for Humanity Zambia has since 2019 been implementing the Participatory Approach to Safe Shelter Awareness (PASSA) under a Comic Relief funded project in Makululu, Kabwe District. The approach is a participatory method of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) related to shelter safety that builds local capacity to reduce shelter-related risk by raising awareness and developing skills within the community.
As part of the approach, Makululu community members with support from Habitat for Humanity Zambia developed community action plans aimed at outlining actions to reduce shelter related risks in the community such as strong winds and floods.
Today, Makululu community members embarked on a tree planting exercise of 300 trees with support from the Forestry Department under the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment.
The Ward Development Committee (WDC) Chairperson, Mr. Charles Bwalya stated that he was excited to see the exercise come to fruition after supporting community members in developing action plans.
Meanwhile, PASSA Committee member Ms. Christine Chama said the tree planning tree exercise will go a long way in curbing shelter risks such as strong winds which periodically blew away roofing sheets of some houses in the area.
