Today, we had the privilege to officially launch the Improved Access to WASH Services through Community-Driven Models Project, which will be implemented in the Ngabwe and Kabwe districts of Central Province. The event was graced by Mr. Lennox Shimwambwa, the Kabwe District Commissioner, representing the Provincial Minister. This project, which commenced on December 1, 2024, and is scheduled for completion on March 31, 2028, is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The primary objective of this project is to enhance access to water, sanitation, hygiene, and waste management practices for over 32,223 community members in the Katondo community of Kabwe District and the Mukubwe community of Ngabwe District. Our specific aspirations are that at least 40% of households in Katondo and 60% in Ngabwe will gain access to improved sources of basic drinking water, and at least 30% of these households will benefit from upgraded sanitation facilities.
Additionally, we are committed to empowering community members to adopt effective hygiene practices, targeting that at least 70% of individuals will engage in handwashing with soap at the four critical times. The launch event also saw the attendance of esteemed dignitaries, including His Royal Highness, Chief Mukubwe, Ngabwe District Commissioner Mr. Hector Silongwe, Ngabwe Area Member of Parliament Mr. Wesley Kolala, and Kabwe Central Member of Parliament Ms. Chrizoster Halwindi Phiri.
Prior to the launch of the project, an inception meeting was held yesterday, which involved various stakeholders vital to the effective implementation of the project. The meeting aimed to align the team and stakeholders on the project’s goals, objectives, and approach, including their roles. Participants were drawn from institutions such as the Kabwe Municipal Council, Ngabwe Town Council, the District Education Board, Ward Development Committes, and Lukanga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (LgWSC).
This project represents a significant step towards improving the health and well-being of our communities. Together, we will work towards creating lasting change and ensuring that everyone has access to essential WASH services.
