TRAINING VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES IN SACKS

Habitat for Humanity Zambia through the Community-Driven Models for WASH Improvement Project being implemented in Kabwe District and the Home Equals Campaign is conducting a 5-day sack gardening training from 29th January 2024 to 2nd February 2024. The training is targeting a total of 30 participants drawn from Makululu community of Kabwe District who are gender-based violence survivors, community-based volunteers working with government line ministries such as the Ministry of Health and change agents that Habitat for Humanity Zambia has been working with in various projects.

The training is aimed at equipping the participants with hands-on innovative urban agriculture production techniques with the use of biodegradable sacks. The sack being a production medium used in vertical agriculture. The training will equip participants with knowledge on the value of sack gardening, what vegetables and crops can be grown under sack gardening, soil fertility initiatives, nutritional value of vegetables and fruits, principles of crop production, root vegetable production and management, leafy vegetable production and management, and marketing strategies.

It is envisaged that the training will go a long way in ensuring vulnerable households in Makululu have an opportunity to respond to nutritional deficit, unbalanced diet, and food insecurity.

A total of 100 Makululu community members will be trained, and 15,000 assorted vegetables and fruits seedlings will be purchased for the sack gardens to be established in Makululu under the Community-Driven Models for WASH Improvement Project. In addition, a borehole has been constructed under the Home Equals Campaign in close proximity to the sack gardens to ensure the vegetables and fruits are well nourished.
